McMAHAN, HORTON EACH SCORE WINS

May 11, 2013 - After two straight weeks of postponements due to pesky rain Tazewell Speedway drivers and fans were itching to get back to racing. Even with threatening skies and windy conditions the pits quickly filled up with cars from all over the region with a total tally well over 70.

The Modified Street division was on showcase in the Buster Cupp Memorial Modified Madness. Twin fourteen lap features paying $250 each to win added up to a total of 28 laps in honor of the number that Buster used on his familiar Pure Street El Camino. In time trials Gary Blanken of Morristown bested the eleven car field with a lap of 13.659 seconds with Dakota Knuckles of Ewing, VA posting a second best time of 13.879 seconds. As Blanken and Knuckles brought the field around to take the one to go signal from flagman Bruce Caylor, Blanken would duck pitside with problems. This would move Warren McMahan up into the inside of the front row. After two failed attempts at a clean start McMahan would be moved back to the second row putting Clyde Overholt into the pole position. At the drop of the green Knuckles would use the outside line to take the early lead. By lap three McMahan had taken third away from Robbie Buchanan and second place away from Overholt. On lap eight McMahan used the low groove to pass Knuckles for the lead and pick up the win in the Dandridge Service Station & Garage, Derrick Whitson Attorney at Law, Jabo's Pharmacy, Oscar's Golf & Country Club sponosored Monte Carlo.
