Trammell shows the way in late model win

Third-generation racer Jason Trammell of Knoxville captured his fourth Late Model win in a row by leading every lap of the feature on Saturday night. By turning the fastest lap in time trials and winning the Fast Car dash Trammell earned the pole for the feature. Former Modified Street and Sportsman standout Clyde Overholt of Tazewell would start on the outside pole position.In the opening laps Overholt was able to hold his own till Trammell started widening the gap. By the halfway mark Trammell had pulled out to a full straight lead as Overholt had his hands full battling Dakotah Knuckles of Ewing, VA for second. Trammell was able to cruise the rest of the way for his fourth win of the season in a seventeen year old Rayburn Race Car powered by a Vic Hill Racing Engine and sponsored by Trammell Construction, Fast Lane Signs & Graphics, Smoky Mountain Wellness Magazine, Hatmaker Holdings and Dents R Us Collision Center.

In Sportsman action Russellville’s Aaron Guinn scored his fourth win of the season by leading every lap of the twenty lap feature. Last week’s winner Cody Smith of Barbourville, KY was quickest in qualifying with Guinn turning in the second fastest time. At the drop of the green for the feature Guinn smashed the loud pedal taking the lead down the back stretch. Behind him Smith filed into second with Travis Fultz of Harrogate and Matt Tharp of Luttrell giving chase.

By lap eight Guinn had checked out on the field yet the crowd on hand was entertained as there was side by side racing going on throughout the field. With five laps to go Guinn had extended his lead a full straight over Smith. Leading flag to flag Guinn earned the win in the LaBel Commercial Realty, ProTech Tire & Auto, Stinson DDS, Cowboy’s Auto Sales, Fast Lane Signs & Graphics sponsored, DJ’s Performance Race Engine powered Warrior 1G Race Car.

Coming into Saturday night’s the bounty was still on for any Super Stock driver that could beat points leader Brad Davis who had won four of the six events so far this season. Cody Thompson of Tazewell set fast time earning the pole for the twenty lap feature alongside Davis. Using the top groove to his advantage Davis jumped into the lead in the opening lap trailed by Thompson, Robbie Buchanan of Tazewell and Logan Cobb of Morristown. By lap five Thompson began closing in on the back bumper of Davis.

The caution flag would fly on lap nine for water on the track. On the restart contact between Thompson and Buchanan sent both cars spinning in turn one. Thompson would pitside to change a flat tire while Buchanan moved up into the second spot. With the laps winding down Buchanan made several attempts to challenge Davis for the lead and claim the bounty. Davis lead the rest of the way for his fifth win of the year in the Phantom Race Engine powered S&S Race Car with sponsorship from Jeffers Exterminating, Andrews Construction, Dynamic Machine, Locus Church, Forever Young Amusements, Little Caesars Pizza of New Tazewell, Southern Outdoors, Paradise Marine, Old Town Grill, Allen Earl Photography, Matlock Decals and Rick Welch Racing.

The wildest action of the night came during the Classic Car feature. A season high thirteen cars signed in with John Stevens earning the pole and last week’s winner Hayston Collett starting second. With the drop of the green Collett wrestled his way into the lead followed by Stevens, Will Carey, Josh Chesney and Jesse Hickman. By the third lap Stevens was tapping the back bumper of Collett for the lead. On the next lap contact sent boths cars spinning. Stevens would be sent to the rear for causing the caution. Collett would retain the lead with Carey moving into second.

On the restart Chesney muscled his way past Carey for second. On lap nine Chesney was reshaping Collett’s back bumper while fighting for the lead. Meanwhile, Stevens was busy working his way back up through the field. The yellow flag would fly on lap twelve as Tim Stevens suffered a flat tire. On the ensuing restart Stevens took third away from Carey. With the white flag in the air Chesney made a last chance attempt at the win yet would spin on his own allowing Stevens to take the runner-up spot. Collett celebrated his second win in a row piloting the Bullco Trucking, Glass Plus of Middlesboro, AFCO Racing Products Classic Car Sedan.

East Tennessee dirt racing ace Kurt Owens of Newport shook off the bad luck bug to notch his first 4 Cylinder feature win of the season over a hard charging Mark Wallace of Maynardville.
