With the coming of October it was time for the 8th Annual Fall Brawl at Tazewell Speedway. Even though the chilly temps kept some away the crowd on hand was treated to high-banked racing and witness a young driver earn his first career win.Limited Late Models were on showcase with $2,000 up for grabs in a thrity-five lap feature. Third-generation racer Jason Trammell of Knoxville clocking in the fastest lap in qualifying of 11.446 seconds. Dakotah Kncuckles of Ewing, VA was second quickest with a lap of 11.645 seconds. The top five qualifiers were inverted for a six lap dash to determine the starting order for the main event. Tazewell’s Clyde Overholt would win the dash with Brian Shockley of Thorn Hill, Knuckles, Anthony White of Clinton and Trammell rounding out the top five.
Overholt and Shockley would bring the field to the green flag. Using the outside line Shockley would squeeze into the lead on the back stretch while Knuckles and White raced door-to-door. Knuckles would muscle his way past Overholt to take over second on the next lap. On the third circuit Overholt’s car would get out of shape and cause him to slip back to fifth. The caution flag would fly on lap eight for debris on the speedway.
On the restart Knuckles began pressuring Shockley for the lead using the low groove. Knuckles would pull even with Shockley on the back stretch and get completely sideways in turn four trying to make the pass down low. On lap thirteen White would drop out with mechanical troubles allowing Trammell to move up a spot.
By lap sixteen Shockley held a six car length lead over Knuckles and Trammell. Just as he began closing the gap on the leader Knuckles would slow on the back stretch with a flat tire on lap twenty-three. With the field reset Trammell would take over second followed by Overholt and Knoxville’s Jeff Wolfenbarger of Knoxville, who was piloting the car owned by Matthew Holt. With the laps winding down Trammell put his car in Shockley’s tracks trying to reel in the leader. Shockley would hold his line and hold off Trammell to score his first career win in the Team Seventeen Racing, Top Notch Construction, Discount Parts City, Gust Construction, FastLane Sign & Graphics sponsored Rocket XR-1 Race car with power from a Vic Hill Racing Engine.

Sportsman Late Models were also in the spotlight with a $1,000 to win feature. Points champion Travis Fultz of Harrogate was quickest in qualifying with a lap of 12.046 seconds. Rookie of the Year Odie Overholt of Tazewell was second quickest with a lap of 12.308 seconds. The top five qualifiers would also be inverted for a six lap dash. Overholt would win the dash over Fultz and Sneedville’s Jason Sizemore.
With the flash of the green flag Fultz would use the top line to snatch the lead on the back stretch while Overholt, Sizemore, Tazewell’s Justin James and Chris Raines of Harrogate fought for positions. On the fourth circuit Overholt was on Fultz’s back bumper and challenging for the lead. The leaders would catch the tail of the field by the eighth lap.
On lap eleven Overholt began using the low groove to pull alongside Fultz. Three laps later Overholt dove low in turn two to make a drag race down the back chute. The pair would make contact sending Overholt spinning and ending his shot for the lead. Fultz would lead the rest of the way for the win driving the Harrogate Collision, Petty’s Wrecker Service, Tim Fletcher Heating & Coolling, Cowboy’s Auto Sales sponsored Bloomquist Race Car powered by a DJ’s Performance Race Engine.

Derik Duggan of Lenoir City turned the fastest lap in 4 Cylinder time trials yet would draw a three on the invert draw. This would put Cosby’s Joey Allen and Shane Bullock of Caryville on the front row for the $500 to win feature. Allen would take the point on the opening lap while Bullock and Duggan battled side by side for second. Duggan would muscle past Bullock and set his sights on Allen for the lead. Working the low line Duggan would drag race Allen on the back stretch of the fourth lap. Two circuits later Duggan would slip into the lead on the front chute.
The action would slow on lap fourteen as Tommy Newton slowed on the back stretch. During the caution Allen would drop out of contention with mechanical woes. Duggan would go unchallenged for the win behind the wheel of the Turpin’s Transmission, West haven Speed Equipment, Turpin’s Auto Repair Mustang with power from T&N Race Engines.

In Street Stock action Mohawk’s Logan Cobb turned the quickest lap in qualifying with a lap of 14.777 seconds and draw the three on the invert. Jamie Whitt of Wise, VA and Kevin Smith of Barbourville, KY would pace the field for the $500 to win feature. Smith would take the lead on the opening as Cobb and Whitt filed in line. On the fourth lap Cobb would lose a right rear wheel while exiting turn four. He would rejoin the field after diving pitside for repairs.
Up front Smith was in full control of the field. Meanwhile Cobb was working on getting back to the front. For several laps Cobb tried to get around the car of Coty Henderson. With just a handful of laps remaining Cobb cleared Henderson. The same couldn’t be said for J.J. Green as he made contact with Henderson while trying to pass on the front chute. The contact would send Green’s truck crashing into the outside wall in turn one. Green would walk away uninjured. Smith would lead the rest of the way in the Smith’s Siding & Guttering and DeSIGNables sponsored Camaro and hoist the big check in Victory Lane.
