On a hot August night Tazewell Speedway presented another night of the high speed action that brought fans and drivers from all over the area. It was also a double points night for all classes. Before the evening was over a fan favorite returned to Victory Lane and one young driver earned his first career win.

Brian Shockley of Thorn Hill recorded the quickest lap in Limited Late Model time trials with a lap of 11.803 seconds. Pulling the four on the invert draw would relegate Shockley starting on the outside of the second row. This would put current Limited Late Model points leader Aaron Guinn of Russellville and Greg Estes of Jonesville, VA on the front row for the thirty lap feature. With the wave of the green flag Guinn took control as Estes, Knoxville’s Jason Trammell and Shockley gave chase. By the tenth lap the trio of Guinn, Estes and Trammell began widening the gap on the rest of the field. On lap eleven the car of Michael Rutherford would slow on the front stretch. On the restart Estes’ car failed to come up to speed as he suffered a flat right rear tire. Trammell would inherit second yet wasn’t able to catch Guinn in the final laps. Going flag-to-flag Guinn piloted the Lloyd’s Electric Service, Mahle Motorsport, McRod Designs, Lakeway Title Services, PPM Race Products, Sam Neill Insurance sponsored Warrior Race Car with power from a DJ’s Performance Race engine to his second win of the season and retain the points lead.

Coming into the night five separate Sportsman drivers had earned wins in the 2020 season with one driver, Joe Bray of Tazewell, collecting his first career win. James Parrott of Rutledge, still searching for his first win of the season, was quickest in qualifying with a lap of 12.370 seconds yet would draw the four on the invert. This would put good friends Mitchell Burke of Tazewell and Washburn’s Jerry Boling on the front row of the twenty lap dash. Using the outside starting spots Boling and Parrott sprinted into the front on the first lap as Burke and Tazewell’s Robbie Buchanan jockeyed for third. By the fifth lap Boling had begun pulling away from Parrot, who was busy holding off Burke. On lap seven Burke would retire from the race with front suspension troubles and bring out the caution.
On the restart Parrot began pressuring Boling for the lead yet couldn’t find a lane to pass. The last caution would fly on lap fifteen for debris on the speedway. On the ensuing restart, current Sportsman points leader Odie Overholt of Tazewell, threw his hat into the fight for the lead after starting seventh on the grid. The feature would belong to Boling as he lead every lap for his first career Sportsman win, in only his second season of competition, driving the Housing Material Surplus, Cedar Grove Marina, Halo Bar & Grill, Kuhn’s Carpentry & Odd Jobs, Shane’s Pump Service, Freeman’s AMSOIL Synthetic Lubricant Supply, Rick Atkins Bobcat & Lawn Care sponsored, DJ’s Performance Race Engine powered GRT Race Car.
