Milder temperatures coupled with the annual Kids Nickel Night brought out a large crowd on Saturday night at Tazewell Speedway. The Kids Nickel Night, sponsored by First Century Bank, was a fun time for all involved as kids 6-12 worked to collect a share of the 20,000 nickels spread along the front stretch. Beforehand, a Candy Toss, sponsored by Sandarella Salon & Spa, was held for the wee ones in front of the crowd.In Limited Late Model action Dakotah Knuckles of Ewing, VA tuned the fastest lap in time trial with a lap of 12.107 seconds with Sevierville’s Mack McCarter qualifying second with a lap of 12.201 seconds. Knuckles would pull a three on the invert draw giving Knoxville’s Jason Trammell the pole starting position for the thirty lap feature.
Trammell and McCarter would bring the field storming out of turn four with the drop of the green flag. Using the low line, Trammell would slip into the lead on the back stretch with McCarter and Knuckles falling in line. In the opening laps McCarter went to the high side and began gaining ground on Trammell. On lap four McCarter pulled even with Trammell, bringing the crowd to it’s feet. As the duo drag raced down the front stretch to complete lap number five McCarter would take the lead just under the flagman’s stand.
With the race a 1/3 of the way complete, MCarter and Trammell began pulling away from the rest of the field. Meanwhile. Sneedville’s Jody Horton, who started sixth, was working his way past his opponents. By lap twelve MCarter had checked out on Trammell with a ten car length gap. Midway through the feature the leader had caught the tail of the field and began putting cars down a lap. McCarter would dominate the rest of the way for his first Tazewell Speedway victory piloting the McCarter Brothers Racing, Parkway Liquor Store, Tennessee Homemade Wines, Hidden Valley Cattle Ranch, Loose Gruff 2 sponsored Longhorn Chassis with power from a Vic Hill Racing Engine.

Former Sportsman points champion Travis Fultz of Harrogate was quickest in time trials with a lap of 12.406 seconds with current points leader James Parrott of Rutledge recording the second quickest time. Fultz would draw the one on the invert draw to start on the pole for the twenty lap feature. From the flash of the green Fultz took control as Parrott, Tazewell’s Jerry Boling, Odie Overholt and Mitchell Burke gave chase.
On lap five Boling would spin on his own in turn four right in front of Overholt, who made contact and would retire from the event with right front damage. On the ensuiung restart Fultz began pulling away from Parrott by going up to the top groove of the speedway. Not even lap traffic could slow Fultz’s pace as he lead flag to flag for his first win of the season in the Petty’s Wrecker Service, Tim Fletcher Heating & Air, Cowboy’s Auto Sales sponsored, DJ’s Performance Race Engine powered Rocket Race car.

Modified Street points leader David Clark of Tazewell came into the night looking for redemption after giving up the win in last Sunday’s feature, losing a right rear wheel with only five laps to go. Clark would record the fastest lap in qualifying with a lap of 13.170 seconds. Last Sunday’s winner Michael Woods of Morristown turn in the second quickest lap of 13.193 seconds. Clark would pull the three on the invert draw giving Tazewell’s Brad Davis the pole for the feature alongside Woods.
As the field raced down the front chute on the opening lap Davis would shove his way into the lead as Clark moved into second. Behind them Woods settled into third as Newport natives Eric Hux and Kurt Owens raced door-to-door for fourth. On the second lap Clark moved to the inside of Davis to challenge for the lead. On the next lap Clark shove his way into the lead on the back straightaway. Clark would lead the rest of the for his fifth Tazewell Speedway win of the season in the Big Cheese Motorsports, Slim & Trim Weight Loss Center, Sams Trucking, Earl Heating & Air, Dynamic Machine, Kiddieland Daycare, Gatos Tacos, Clyde Overholt Racing, Shorty’s Shock Service sponsored Camaro with power from a Phantom Race Engine.

In Classic Car action Maynardville’s Quincy Arnwine was fastest in time trials yet drew the two on the invert draw giving current points leader Hayston Collett of Harlan, KY the pole starting spot. Collett would jump into the early lead as Arnwine and Richie Overholser battled side by side for second. On lap three Collett’s car would slow on the speedway and bring out the caution. Inheriting the lead Arwnine had his hands full holding off a pesky Overholser. Several times throughout the feature Overholser was glued to Arnwine’s back bumper. Arnwine held on for his second win of the season driving the Wallace Auto Sales, M&E Boat Services, Knoxville Pull-A-Part, Bubba Brews Sports Bar & Grill sedan with a DJ’s Performance Race Engine under the hood.

Cosby’s Joey Allen recorded the quickest lap in 4 Cylinder qualifying yet drew the three on the invert draw giving Caryville’s Shane Bullock the pole for the feature. Using the prime starting spot Bullock would take the early lead as Hayston Collett and Allen duked it out for second. In the first half of the race Bullock began puliing away from the field. The scariest moment of the night came on lap three as the car of Tommy Cameron slammed the outside wall as he exited turn two. Cameron was transported to a local hospital for evaluation.
With the feature back underway Allen started working hs way toward the front, taking over second on lap ten and catching the leader three laps later. Bullock fought off the wiley veteran for his first Tazewell Speedway 4 Cylinder win driving the Express Employment Professionals, Hatmaker Holdings, Elliot Heating & Air, Advanced Transmissions, West Haven Speed Equipment, Shorty’s Shock Service Ford Mustang.

In Street Stock action Mohawk’s Logan Cobb turned the quickest lap and drew the one on the invert to earn the pole for the feature race. Greg Harville of Tazewell lined up on the outside of the front row. With the drop of the green flag Harville used the outside line to muscle hiw way into the lead. Harvile and Cobb entertained the crowd in the early laps as they raced door-to-door. On the third lap Harville’s car would slip up in turn two and allow Cobb to take the lead on the back stretch. Midway through, Cobb began to pull away from Harville. Behind them James Weaver and Donovan Long were fighting hard for third.
Cobb would lead the remaining laps and celebrate in Victory Lane yet after a post-race protest from Harville, Cobb’s motor was found to have improper parts and Harville was awarded the win. The motor of Weaver’s car was protested yet he refused to tear down. The refusal gave Long the second place finish. Harville celebrated his first career win with the Sparky’s Precision Window Tinting, Clyde Overholt Racing, Tri-State Coatings, Petty’s Wrecker Service, Hawaiian Shaved Ice, Chiefstein Engineering Toyota Camry.
