August
9, 2014 - For the second weekend in a row pesky rains threatened
to cancel racing at Tazewell Speedway. The drivers and fans
that ignored the forecast were rewarded with another night of
close quarters racing with one driver getting his first ever
win, one driver breaking a track qaulifying record and a fan
favorite winning two in a row.
Eleven
Tazewell Late Models signed in with Steve Smith of Powell setting
fast time in qualifying with a lap of 11.840 seconds. As the
field gathered for the start of the feature Smith did not make
it to the track. Bryan Hendrix of Knoxville would move up and
start on the outside of the front row alongside Dakotah Knuckles
of Ewing, VA. From the drop of the green Hendrix, who won the
feature two weeks ago, distanced him self from Knuckles who
had his hands full holding off Josh Henry of Newport. Henry
would use the low side of the track pulling up beside Knuckles
several time until a rear axle problem took him out of contention
on lap sixteen. On the restart Josh Collins of Powell and Jody
Horton of Sneedville put the pressure on Knuckles for the second
spot. On the last lap Knuckles and Collins made contact in turn
two with both cars suffering damage. As that happened Horton
slipped by to finish second. Up front it was Hendrix scoring
his second win in a row in the Sweet Trucking sponsored GRT
Race Car with power from a Bunch Racing Engine.

In Sportsman action Josh Fields of Tazewell broke the track
qualifying record previously held by Anthony Burchett with a
new time of 12.129 seconds. Fields, who was looking for his
fourth win in a row, earned the pole position sharing the front
row with Clyde Overholt of Tazewell. Fields took the early lead
with Overholt and Keith Chapman of Powell following closely.
Chapman used the low groove to his advantage on lap eight to
take second away from Fields but a caution flag moved him back
to the third spot. On the restart Chapman once again mounted
a challenge and on lap eleven passed Fields on the back stretch
and took the lead from Overholt in turn four. Chapman would
lead the remaining laps yet was disqualified after the race
for refusing to sell the carburator from his car. The win would
be awarded to Overholt in the Overholt Fabrication, Noahs
Wholesale, Baker Tree Service, Baileys Body Shop sponsored
Rayburn Race Car powered by a DJs Performance Racing Engine.
