THOMPSON, WOLFENBARGER SPLIT CLASSIC WINS,
COLLINS SCORES LATE MODEL WIN

June 7, 2014 - Tazewell Speedeway's ever popular Classic Car divsion were in the spotlight with twin features and double points up for grabs. Eli Keck would set fast time among fifteen entries in qualifying with a lap of 14.814 seconds and earn the pole position for the first fifteen lap feature. Keck would take the early lead followed by Phillip Thompson, Joel Wolfenbarger, Chris Evans and Bart Baxter. With little precipitation falling in the previous week the dry track quickly challenged the field. Keck would get loose come out of turn two on lap four allowing Thompson to slip into the lead. From there Thompson held off a pesky Wolfenbarger for fourth feature win of the season in the Flynn Carpet Service, Skyline Transportation, Filmax Filtration Systems, Logistics Detailers Classic Car.

Drawing the three on the invert draw Thompson would start third in the second feature. Chris Evans would share the front row of the second race with Joel Wolfenbarger. With the drop of the green flag Evans shot into the lead trailed by Thompson, Wolfenbarger and Scott Lacy. As the field came out of turn four to complete the first lap contact between Evans and Thompson would send Thompson hard into the outside wall. Thompson's car retired with rear suspension damage and a flat tire. Evans would not continue. This would hand the lead over to Joel Wolfenbarger who would lead the remaining laps for his second career Classic car win with sponsorship from Tennessee RV Sales and Service, Halls Auto Parts, Midway IGA, Red's Barber Shop, Rockin R Graphics and The Diner at Twisters.

The Tazewell Late Models drew eighteen hotshoes from all around east Tennessee with multi-time champion Jason Trammell setting fast time with a lap of 12.621 seconds. Trammell would draw a two on the invert and start on the outside of the front row alongside Steve Smith. Trammell charged into the early lead pulling away from Smith and Josh Collins, who took second away from Smith on lap three. By lap twelve Collins tracked down Trammell and on the next lap a blown right rear tire would end Trammell's bid for the win. As Collins stormed away on the restart Smith and Josh Henry wowed the crowd as they battled for the second spot. Henry would use the moisture in the low groove in turns one and two to pull up alongside Smith yet Smith would hold off the Henry in turns three and four. This action repeated for several laps with both drivers racing closely yet giving respect. Cory Hedgecock, who was driving the car normally driven by Dakotah Knuckles would bring out the caution on lap seventeen as he spun in turn four. On lap eighteen Mitchell Childress would spin high in turn four just as race leader Collins was coming through the turn. Collins slammed on the brakes and slid sideways into Childress with minimal damage. Collins would retain the lead and continue for his fourth win of the season in the Doug Gregory Motorsports, B&B Race Engines, TrakStar Race Car sponsored by O'Reilly Auto Parts, Outlaw Graphics and Weeks Fabrication. During the post race interview a smiling Coillins revealed that he injured his left hand in the collision with Childress yet soldiered on for the victory.

Jordon Horton of Sneedville earned quick time honors among eleven Sportsman entries with a lap of 13.076 seconds. With the invert draw Josh Driskill of Newport would earn his first ever pole position start. Driskill pulled out to the early lead with Horton, Steve Smith, Keith Chapman and Jacob Owens giving chase. As Driskill slowed his pace for lap traffic on lap ten Horton would slip by for the lead. Driskill was holding on to a solid second place finish until he spun on lap twelve. Up front the "Sneedville Sniper" held off Smith for his sixth win of the season in the River Place on the Clinch, Brabson Trucking and Excavating, Discount Parts City, Greasy Rock Auto Shop, Southern Pride Land & Cattle sponsored Warrior Chevrolet SS.

Brad Davis continued his winning streak in the Modified Street feature starting on the pole with Kurt Owens starting on the outside of the front row. Owens, who normally races in the 4 Cylinder division, pestered Davis for the early lead while holding off the challenge for second from Tony Horton. Owens threatened Davis for the entire race yet couldn't find the right spot to take the lead away. Davis would record his fifth win of the year in the Debbie Fields-The Realty Group, Jeffers Exterminating, Tires Etc, Andrews Construction Rainmaker Race Car with Phantom Race Engine power.

Kevin Smith led every lap of the Pure Street feature yet was disqualified after a post race inspection giving Michael Boyd his first win of the season.

Chuck McMahan took the lead away from polesitter Jeromy Collins on lap nine to score his fifth 4 Cylinder win of the year in the FBR Racing, Round Boy Motorsports, Lowes Auto Parts Ford Mustang.

This Saturday night June 14 we welcome back the Chevrolet Performance Super Late Model Series. Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame member Ronnie Johnson of Chattanooga, TN currently leads series points and will be on hand along with drivers from all around the Southeast as they compete for $3000 to win.
