COLLINS REPEATS FOR LATE MODEL WIN

May 3, 2014 - Josh Collins of Powell picked up from where he left off last week to claim his second Tazewell Late Model win in a row after inheriting the lead on lap twenty-six of the feature and take home the $1500 first reward. Eighteen drivers from all over the region signed in with Corey Hedgecock of Loudon setting fast time with a lap of 12.117 seconds. Brian Smith of Barbourville, KY would earn the pole position after the invert draw sharing the front row with Greg Estes of Jonesville, VA.
Smith would jump into the lead followed closely by Hedgecock, Collins and Jason Trammell. Wade Howerton would bring out the caution on the second circuit as he spun on his own in turn four. On the restart Estes muscled his way into the lead with Hedgecock slipping his way into second. The yellow flag would fly again on lap five as Jason Trammell lost a wheel on the back stretch. After the field took the green on the restart Smith would get sideways in turn one and get collected by Josh Henry. Smith would retire and Henry continued with front end body damage. While that was going on Hedgecock had dove low in turn two looking for the lead. As he did Estes' car got loose and the pair made contact sending Estes into the pits with damage. He would rejoin the field at the tail of the lead lap and work his way throgh the field to finish fourth. Hedgecock would inherit the lead with Collins and Bryan Hendrix giving chase. Hendrix would drop out on lap twelve with a flat tire giving the third spot to Jason Cardwell. Midway through the race Hedgecock and Collins battled hard for the lead yet by lap twenty Hedgecock had pulled away to almost a full straight advantage. Just as it looked that Hedgecock was cruising to the victory he slowed on the front stretch with a broken ball joint ending his night. Collins took over the lead with Josh Henry moving into second. On the restart Henry dove low in turn four looking for the lead and almost made contact with Collins. As Henry backed off Cardwell slipped back into second for his best Tazewell Speedway finish. Collins would lead the rest of the way in the Gregory Motorsports, O'Reilly Auto Parts, Outlaw Graphics, B&B Performance Engine powered TrakStar Chassis.

Last week's Modified Madness winners Brad Davis and Tony Horton would share the front row of the feature. As the field took the green and swarmed into the first turns Justin James would get high in turn two, tagging the outside wall exiting the turn. The hard contact sent James' car barrel rolling down the back stretch. After a few tense moments James would emerge under his own power and was sent to a local hospital for evaluation. Davis would take the lead early with Horton right on his heels. Buchanan was able to slip by Horton for second but it wasn't enough as Davis made it two in a row in the Debbie Fields-The Realty Group, Old Town Grill, Jeffers Exterminating, Southern Outdoors, Andrews Construction, Tires Etc, Superior Construction, Soul Bleeds, Country gun and Pawn, Allen Earl Photography, Phantom Race Engines, Rainmaker Race Cars Camaro.

Burchett would start on the outside pole beside Clyde Overholt after the invert draw. The pair would go at it side by side in the early laps with Jordon Horton and Keith Chapman duking it out behind them. Burchett would try the inside groove on lap four trying to take the lead away from Overholt. By lap eight Horton had shook off Chapman and made it a three way battle for the top spot. Dustin Hoover would bring out the yellow flag on lap twelve as he spun on his own in turn one. On the restart Horton would spin sending himself to the rear. As the field regrouped Burchett got up on the wheel and started putting pressure on Overholt for the lead using the low groove to his advantage. Bringing the crowd to their feet Overholt and Burchett came out of turn four door to door on lap fourteen. As they raced down the front stretch they would make hard contact sending Burchett up on two wheel for a scary moment. Both drivers would continue with tempers flared. With the laps winding down Burchett would try the low side again yet Overholt was able to hold on for his secind win of the year in the Overholt Fabrication, Noah’s Wholesale, Baker Tree Service, Bailey’s Body Shop sponsored Stinger Race Car powered by a DJ’s Performance Racing Engine.

Tharp would dive to the inside on lap six with Thompson slamming the door. The pair excited the crowd throughout the entire feature with Tharp looking inside of Thompson several times. As the white flag was displayed Tharp got up on the wheel and set his sights for a victory. As he dove down low in turn four for the last time he would make contact with Thompson. This would send both cars spinning just as the checkered flag was being shown. Joel Wolfenbarger would slip by and take his first ever Classic Car victory with sponosrship from Midway IGA, Halls Auto Parts, Red's Barber Shop, Rockin R Graphics and Tenness RV Sales and Service.
