COLLINS SEALS THE DEAL FOR THE WIN

September 28, 2013 - With the season winding down the last points race of the season was held on Saturday night. In two divisions the points chase would come down to the very end.

Robbie Buchanan, crowned the Modified Street Points Champion two weeks ago, would set fast time in qualifying and draw a three in the invert draw. This would put Warren McMahan on the front row alongside Tony Horton, the 2010 Points Champion. Horton, who was looking for his first win since August of last year, would take the point on the first lap after racing door to door with McMahan. On lap twelve Dakotah Knuckles would get loose coming out of turn two. As he was sliding slideways down the back stretch he was collected by Brad Davis. Knuckles would continue with Dacvis retiring from the race with heavy front end damage. On the restart McMahan started turning up the heat on Horton. The final caution came on lap eighteen as the car of Curtis Jones spilled fluid on the track. During the caution McMahan would drop out with engines woes. Horton would lead all laps to score his first win of the season in Discount Auto Parts, Jones Hay Company sponsored Greasy Rock Race Car. After the race Dakotah Knuckles would be awarded the Rookie of The Year in Modified Street.

The last two times that Josh Collins of Powell was leading a Tazewell Late Model feature he would drop out prematurely with problems On Saturday night he aimed to make a statement and prove that he was one of the best hotshoes around. Greg Estes would set fast time with a lap of 12.358 seconds and draw a three on the invert. This would put Josh Henry with Collins on the front row of the feature. Collins would shoot into the lead at the drop of the green and by lap six would have a straightaway length advantage over second place Henry. Collins would lead every lap to secure his third Tazewell Speedway win of the year in the Vic Hill Racing Engines powered Warrior Race Car sponsored by SpaTacular Salon, Tyler Jenkins Racing, JCM Components and A+ Electric. Jason Trammell earned the 2013 Tazewell Late Model Points Championship with Brian Shockley awarded Rookie of The Year.

With fifty different drivers competing this season the Sportsman division has proven to be a success in it's first season. Heath Alvey of Dandridge would set quick time and draw a two in the invert draw. This would put him on the outside of the front row alongside Jordon Horton. Alvey would use the outside line to take the lead followed by Horton, Anthony Burchett, Matt Tharp and Keith Chapman. Horton was following in Alvey's tracks waiting for his time to strike when he would spin coming out of turn two on lap fifteen. On the restart Burchett dropped out giving Tharp the second spot. Alvey would hold on to score his sixth win of the year in the Smoky Mountain Home Health & Hospice, A&B Seamless Guttering, Diversified Enclosures and Screens, Tinsley Bible Drug Company, Sammy's Auto Parts, Elite Dental, Supreme Towing, Mona-Vie, D&S Automotive Repair sponsored Warrior Race Car powered by a Pro-Built Racing engine. Keith Chapman would win the points battle with Derrick Shockley awarded Rookie of the Year.

Coming into Saturday night's action Shane Lockhart, the 2012 Points Champion in Classic Cars, held only three point lead over Eli Keck. Phillip Thompson would set fast time and draw the three on the invert. This would put Joe Keck on the front row beside of his team mate Eli Keck. Eli Keck would take the point at the drop of the green followed by Chris Evans, Joe Keck, Thompson and Richie Overholser. On lap six as Lockhart was trying to pass on the outside of Overholser coming out of turn two the pair would make contact with Lockhart suffering race ending damage. In the remaining laps Thompson would mount a challenge on Eli Keck yet it wasn't enough as Keck scored the win and wrapped up the Points Championship in the Fat Boyz Racing, Maynardville Muffler Center, Inskip Barber Shop, Crossroad Motors, Eddie's Auto Parts, Hot Rod's Paint and Body sponsored Ford Sedan. Joel Wolfenbarger would be awarded Rookie of the Year.

Jonathan Miracle was a man on a mission as he came into the night wth only a four point lead over Jason Saylor. Miracle started on the outside of the front and quickly took the lead followed by Saylor and Jason Long. Saylor stayed glued to Miracle's back bumper during the early laps only to fade back after getting loose. Miracle would hold off Long to win the feature and his third Pure Street Points Championship in the Dodge Ram pickup owned by Dennis Whitaker. Travis Crosby would earn Rookie of the Year Honors.

Chuck McMahan would continue his season long dominance in the Four Cylinder division as he fought off a hard charging Joey Allen and Kurt Owens to record his fourteenth win of the season and earn the points championship. Chad Manning was awarded the Rookie of the Year.
