September
29, 2012 - Tazewell Speedway opened up the gates for "Championship
Night 2012" as a full moon greeted the large crowd to what
proved to be a very interesting evening.
First up would be the Late Models to qualify as a season high
twenty three late models prepared to challenge the Bad
Fast Taz during time trials. Steve Smith of Powell would
let everyone know that if they were going be successful on this
night he would be the man they would have to beat. He would
end up setting fast time with a 11:921 on a tricky racing surface.
The ever popular Modified Streets would bring in their largest
car count of the season also as sixteen cars prepared for time
trials. Dandridges Warren McMahan would lay claim to the
top spot with a blazing 13:318.
As the Classics took to the track, Knoxvilles Logan Dukes
would come out on top with a 14:417.
In 4 Cylinder time trials Brad Pressley topped a 12 car field
with a 14:642.
The Pure Street division would also have a season high car count
with fourteen cars in a strong field. Dustin Eldridge would
lay down the quick time of 14:702.
Before the action would start Tazewell Speedway would honor
its Track Champions for the 2012 season.
In Late Models Jason Trammell would win his 6th Championship
of his career with 17 year old Matthew Holt being named Rookie
of the Year. Modified Streets would name a very emotional Jordon
Horton its track champion and Tazewells David Clark would
claim the Rookie of the Year honors. Classics would have a double
winner as Shane Lockhart would win both the track championship
and Rookie of the Year. In 4 Cylinders Bubby Braden would be
crowned track champion and Rufus Collett would be Rookie of
the Year.
Dustin Eldridge earned the championship in Pure Street division
with Jason Saylor being named the Rookie of the Year. Aaron
Guinn was named this years recipient of the Anthony Burchett
Award.
First up on the evenings racing would be the Late Model Consolation.
Larry Moore would take home the win with B.J. Morris running
second with both advancing to the feature.
Next up would be the 4 Cylinder feature after the invert Cosbys
Joey Allen would blast into the lead after overtaking Chad Manning
from his third place starting position followed closely by Brad
Pressley. The two would battle tooth and nail with Pressley
repeatedly challenging Allen to the inside only to have Allen
pull away in the waning laps to take his second win in a row.
Pressley would finish second and Manning, Mark Wallace, and
Jeromy Collins completing the top five.
In the Classic feature, things took a turn for the worse after
a restart. Chuck McMahan and Joe Keck would go into turn one
and make contact and turning McMahan to the right and sending
him over the wall and into the catch fence. McMahan would exit
the car in perfect health as a safe race car and a good catch
fence both did their job well in making sure a bad situation
would end up with a driver walking away. As the feature restarted
Robbie Sands once again showed why hes the man to beat
with yet another flag to flag win. Phillip Shockley would bring
his mount home second and Track Champ Shane Lockhart capped
off a great rookie season with third, followed by Jason Beeler
and Eli Keck.
On a side note Tazewell Speedway would like to thank Chargin
Charlie Tharp for donating his point money for drawings
for the Taz Kidz. Great jesture!!!
Modified Street action was hot and heavy as Warren McMahan would
jump to a early lead followed closely by Jordon Horton, Robbie
Buchanan, Gary Blanken, and Brad Davis. As the race went on
McMahan would start to pull away as Horton, Buchanan, and Blanken
were in a tremendous battle for second as they were throwing
haymakers at one another in some of the most exciting racing
of the year. As the race would end McMahan would go on to take
the victory as the top five remain the same but not without
bringing the fans to their feet on several occasions with some
very close racing throughout the event.
In Late Models Steve Smith and Travis Fultz would go hammer
down into turn one and side by side until they came off turn
4. Fultz would fall in line but keep heavy pressure on Smith
as he would keep trying the low line. Bryan Hendrix then started
to apply the pressure to Fultz as Smith started to make some
room between him and the field as they were fighting for second.
Third place starting Jason Trammell started to make his presence
known as he began to apply heavy pressure on Hendrix. After
several laps Trammell finally made the pass work and jumped
into third and immediately started to work on Fultz. With Fultz
and Trammell doing battle, Smith went on to his eighth win of
the season. Fultz managed to hold off Trammell for a hotly contested
second place. Hendrix would bring his mount home fourth and
Steve Carr making a rare appearance would bring his ride home
in fifth.
In the final race of the evening Jason Long and Aaron Guinn
would put on a fierce battle for the lead for the full twenty
laps as they swapped paint, dodged lap traffic, all while putting
on a great show for the fans. With a late caution Jason Saylor
and would enter the fray and make it a three way battle to the
end as they would go nose to tail to the finish. Clyde Overholt
came home fourth in The Big Dodge Truck and Justin
James survived overheating problems for a top five finish.
Next week October 6th, the 2012 season will come to a close
as the 2nd Annual Chris Collinsworth 77 Fall Brawl will bring
on one final bang to the speedway. Both Modified Streets and
Late Models will be going for the top prize of $2000 to win.
4 Cylinders have also been added to the Fall Brawl lineup with
the winner pocketing $300.
