October
13, 2012 - As the curtain was set to fall on the 2012 season.
The Tazewell Speedway drivers had one last hurrah for the fans
before the gates finally closed for the last time of the year.
It was time for the Fall Brawl. After waiting a extra week because
of inclement weather. The fans got what they came for side by
side breathtaking action at it's best. As the track was in tip
top condition for the 2nd Annual Chris Collinsworth Memorial
77 and the time trials told you all you needed to know. Steve
Smith laid down a blistering time of 11:436 as the top 10 would
all get into the 11 second range. A first for the Limited Late
Model division. Fall Brawl rules or not. Next up would be the
Modified Streets and Greg Estes would let everyone know that
to win you were going to have to deal with him after he laid
down a 12:758. Chuck McMahan would threaten the track record
as he just missed Josh Fields track record of 14:421 with a
14:431. Josh Chesney would take the top spot in Pure Streets
with a 14:431 of his own.
In heat racing action for the Limited Late Models Steve Smith,
Matt Henderson, and Mack McCarter would all take wins as Henderson
would take the pole position for the feature on the invert.
Winning the heat races for Modified Streets were Greg Estes,
Robbie Buchanan, and Warren McMahan.
As
the feature racing begin action would be hot and heavy from
the get go. With a strong field of fourteen 4 Cylinders. McMahan
would show the way into turn one only to make heavy contact
with the 111 of Randy Dyke ending McMahan's run for the evening.
After several position swaps for the lead Jeremy Collins would
finally bolt away from the crowd and hold the lead. Meanwhile
back in the pack fifth place running Joey Allen started making
a run to the front and by the final lap he had pulled beside
Collins in turn 1 for the lead. After the two made contact going
into turn two Allen went on to the win and Bubby Braden threaded
the needle for a second place finish followed by Dyke, Mark
Wallace, and Collins rounding out the top 5.
Next
up would be the Modified Streets for their portion of the Chris
Collinsworth Memorial 77 with a 37 lap feature. At the drop
of the green Estes would show his dominance as he bolted out
to a five car lead over Robbie Buchanan and Warren McMahan.
As they were racing for second going into turn one they would
make heavy contact causing a huge pileup and a red flag. Both
would have to go to the pits for repairs and rejoin the field
at the tail as the green fell. After several more cautions the
field finally settled in for some green flag racing with Estes
leading the charge. Gary Blanken, Brad Davis , Jason Sizemore,
Jody and Tony Horton, and McMahan were putting on a show for
the fans as they were swapping paint and positions at every
turn. Blanken had finally started to reel in Estes and was bottom
feeding at every corner trying to take the lead after his last
attempt Estes would suddenly slow and Blanken would lead the
brigade by the disheartened Estes as he entered the pits with
rear end troubles on lap 32. Blanken would then set sail to
biggest payday of his career and collect the checkered and $2000
that went along with it. Brad Davis would haunt his every move
all the way to the finish but would have to settle for second
on one of his best races of the year. McMahan would battle back
from the rear twice as he crossed the finish line third followed
by Jason Sizemore and Tony Horton.
As
one of the strongest Limited Late Model fields to ever hit the
High Banks at the Taz took to the speedway for their chance
at a $2000 payday in the 40 lap feature. The fans didn't know
what they were in for. At the drop of the green Smith and Henderson
battled hard all the way around the track with Smith finally
taking the lead only to immediately start feeling the pressure
from not only Henderson but also McCarter. They battled for
the first five laps until coming off turn 4 on lap six Henderson
would dive under Smith only to have McCarter dive under him
as the crowd rose to their feet as they came three wide off
turn four with neither giving a inch as they passed the flag
stand. Smith would use all of his many years of experience to
hold off the two young bloods until lap eight when Henderson
would show his might and drive into the lead. Smith would then
have to deal Mr. McCarter as he applied heavy pressure on Smith
diving under him at every corner. Meanwhile up front Henderson
was putting some distance between him and the field. As all
of this was going on there was some fantastic racing going on
back throughout the top 10. Josh Henry, Bryan Hendrix, Stacy
Boles, Terry Wolfenbarger, Steve Carr, just to name a few were
battling tooth and nail for every inch of Tazewell's red clay
they could get a hold of. With traffic starting to become a
factor Henderson was slicing and dicing his way to what looked
to be his second win of the 3 night Fall Brawl races. While
completing lap 37 Henderson came up on heavy lapped traffic
as they were all battling for position. Henderson first went
high as lapped traffic was directed to the bottom only to have
the car of Phillip Nichols move in front of him as Henderson
made evasive action to dive under the lapped car darted across
the right front of Henderson causing him to slow and allowing
Smith and McCarter to pass on the high side. As they entered
turn one McCarter and Heath Alvey made contact sending Alvey
into a spin collecting Hendrix and bringing out the final caution
ending both of their nights. With the lap not being complete
Henderson was placed back at the front of the field for the
final three circuits. Henderson would look fine until he came
off turn 2 on the restart and suddenly slow and enter the pits
with front end damage. Smith and McCarter would bolt past pulling
Wolfenbarger, Boles, and Jody Horton with them .They would remain
that way to the finish as McCarter made one final charge only
to come up short as Smith capped off a great season at the Taz
with his ninth win.
In
Pure Street action Josh Chesney would use his pole setting time
to blast off to a early lead. Leaving Jason Long, Jason Sayor,
and Buster Cupp to do battle for second. Chesney would hold
the top spot until lap 8 slowing in front of his competitors.
As they took evasive action to miss the leader Long and Saylor
begin to swap some paint and positions with Long taking the
short end of the stick with what looked to be a wreck looking
for a place to happen. Long made a great save and found his
way back into third all at the same time. As the Rookie of the
Year Saylor was looking for his first ever victory Cupp begin
to close ground and start to show his nose to the leader but
it was to no avail as Saylor sailed on to victory lane in what
was a very popular victory with his fans. Cupp held on to second
and Long, J.J. Green and Justin James rounding out the top 5
and bringing down the curtains for the 2012 season at Tazewell
Speedway.
