CARR, ALVEY SPLIT SPORTSMAN WINS
TRAMMELL HOLDS OFF COLLINS FOR LATE MODEL WIN

June 22, 2013 - With summer officially under way Tazewell Speedway hosted another night of grass roots racing. Under a beautiful full moon the grandstands and pit area quickly filled with fans and drivers from all over the region. On showcase would be the Sportsman Divsion with twin features and double points.
Steve Carr of Rogersville would set quick time among thirteen entries in Sportsman qualifying and establish a new track record of 12.482 seconds. Rex Coffey and Billy Gordon would also eclipse the record set by Keith Chapman in April. Carr and Coffey would make up the front row of the first fourteen lap feature. Carr would take the early lead followed by Coffey, Chapman, Billy Gordon and Heath Alvey. On lap eight Chapman would start pressuring Coffey for the second spot. Carr lead the remaining laps to become the sixth different Sportsman winner this season in the Odello Industries, Holston Auto Parts, Spider Race Engines powered Hopson Race Car. Coffey would disqualified after a post race inspection with improper cylinder heads.

The top five finishers in the first Sportsman feature would be inverted for the start of the second feature. Billy Gordon would share the front row with Heath Alvey. After racing at Tazewell Speedway for over fifteen years, Gordon was still searching for his first late model win. Gordon would jump into the lead followed by Alvey, Chapman, Carr and Anthony Burchett. By lap three Carr would take the third spot away from Chapman. Carr then set his sights on Alvey for the second spot as they raced door to door. Carr would take the second spot on lap eight and make his challenge for the lead. Just after moving into second smoke would emerge from under Carr's hood. On lap nine Gordon checked up in turn two and Carr spun bringing out the caution. Carr's night would end as he parked with power steering problems. On the restart Chapman would jump the start and be relegated to the tail end of the field. Gordon would hold off Alvey until lap ten when Alvey slipped into the lead and Burchett would move into second. It was Alvey's second win of the season in the Mona-Vie, Tinsley Bible Drug Company, Smoky Mountain Home Health and Hospice, A&B Seamless Guttering, Supreme Towing, Pro Built Race Engine powered Warrior Race Car.

Steve Smith of Powell set fast time in Tazewell Late model qualifying with a lap of 11.876 seconds. With the invert draw Josh Collins of Powell, making his first visit to The Taz this season, would line up alongside Jason Trammell on the front row of the feature. Trammell would use the outside to take the early lead with Collins married to his back bumper. Behind them Travis Fultz raced side by side with Smith for the third position. On back Greg Estes and Anthony Arwine banged doors and traded paint as they battled for the fifth spot. Up front Trammell used the bottom groove trying to hold off Collins. By lap fourteen Smith had caught up to the leaders to make it a three way vie for the lead. On lap eighteen Collins dove low coming out of turn number four to try and take the top spot yet it was Trammell's night as he notched his third victory of the season. In Modified Street action pole sitter Gary Blanken held off the challenge from Brad Davis to pick up his fourth win of the season in theBritt's Welding, Morristown Towing and Automotive, Sonny's Collision Monte Carlo.

Two weeks ago Appaches Quinton of Morristown took a nasty tumble down the back stretch in the Pure Street feature destroying his car. After borrowing a car he would start on the outside of the front row of last night's feature. On lap three last week's winner Aaron Guinn would roll his car high in turn four and was able to walk away unscathed. Quinton would lead every lap to capture his first victory in the Pure Street division.

Robbie Sands would set fast time in Classic Car qualifying. After the invert draw Joel Wolfenbarger and Eli Keck would start on the front row of the feature. Wolfenbarger would lead until lap five when Phillip Thompson moved from his fourth starting spot to challenge for the top spot. Thompson would slip by Wolfenbarger on the back stretch on on lap six to take his second ever win at Tazewell Speedway in the Richard Bell owned, Skyline Transportation sponsored Classic Car sedan.
