HILL REPEATS IN NASRA BUDDY ROGERS MEMORIAL

September 23, 2011 - After being rescheduled earlier in the season due to rain the National All Stars Racing Association was greeted with cool temperatures and a gusty fall wind. Last week ended the regular weekly points racing and after the points were totaled up the 2011 track champions were named and certified. In the Tazewell Late Model class Travis Fultz captured his second title in a row. In Modified Street, Warren McMahan grabbed his first points title at Tazewell Speedway. In the Four Cylinder class it was Allen Holloway edging out Bubby Braden for his second Tazewell Speedway title and in the Pure Street division Jonathan Miracle was the champ, also his second. The Tazewell Speedway Classics championship went to last years Anthony Burchett award winner, Jim Yeary. Congratulations to all the 2011 champions from Tazewell Speedway and its fans.

The track officials began the evening by working the track surface which had lots of moisture in it from earlier rains. After the track surface was ran it was time for hot laps followed by qualifying.

The pole winners for each class included:

NASRA Super Late Models- (3) Steve Smith, New Track record at 10.838 seconds in a new C.J. Rayburn Chassis

Modified Street- (31)Greg Estes, 12.960 secs.

Pure Street- Apaches Quinton, 15.812 secs.

Classics- (17) Robbie Sands, 15.368 secs.

First to race were the drivers of the Four Cylinder class with Allen Holloway and Daris Braden making up row one. The leaders did not take the green flag at the same time and the caution flag was displayed just before the cars up front got together in turn three. Several were damaged but most returned for the restart except for the 1of Mark Wallace. Two and three wide racing then began with Holloway moving to the lead but Owens was coming hard to the front from the last position on the field. Marty Phillips got the lead on lap 5 but Owens was quickly on his rear quarter soon after. A lap 6 caution flag was thrown for Hayston Collett who went pit side after a brush with the wall. Phillips, Owens and Holloway were the top three on lap 6 restart. As Collett was able to rejoin the field the battle for first heated up. From lap 7 the two at the front raced side by side but Phillips got the win. It was Phillips first ever win at the high banked speed plant. Owens, Holloway, Bubby Braden and Daris Braden rounded out the top five.

The second feature of the night belonged to the Modified Street class with Greg Estes and Warren McMahan starting from row one. This race saw little passing early as Estes charged ahead of the field. McMahan tried to keep pace but on lap 7 the field was red flagged when Shannon Emery hit the wall and took a wild ride ending in a few flames but thankfully Emery would walk away uninjured. On the lap 7 restart it was Estes, McMahan and Clyde Overholt. Estes was by far the class of the field and seemed to be faster all over the track. McMahan tried to stay with Estes but simply could not. A lap 11 caution gave the field one more shot at the leader but he simply drove away with McMahan and the field in tow. On lap 17 Jordon Horton had problems with his ride just as his dad Tony had before the race began and throughout. The caution flag flew again and the same top three took the green flag to resume the race after the field lined up and the track took care of some fluids that was on the racing surface. On the restart Robbie Buchanan had some bad luck and came pit side just as McMahan and Estes were bumper to bumper. Leonard Bray also fell off the pace and left the field. On the restart Estes took the win. McMahan, Clyde Overholt, Brad Davis and Allen Holt finished out the top five.

Next on the high banks was the NASRA super late models with new track record holder and Rayburn driver, Steve Smith leading the field to green. Early on the race belonged to Hill. On lap 11 just behind the leaders Bryan Hendrix tangled with Travis Fultz and the resulting contact send Fultz first into the outside wall and he then rolled over and back into the inside wall where the car came to rest on top of the wall. Fultz and crew was angry but luckily he was uninjured and walked away. On the restart the top 3 were Hill, Smith and Trammell. On this restart another driver took a wild ride. The 01 of Arnie Fields found himself in the outside wall of turn two and also flipped his car. He too was uninjured. The race was restarted and Hill moved out to a 4-second lead and found out his car could run in basically any groove he chose. Smith and Trammell at this point did well to just hang on. At lap 28 it still looked to belong to Hill as no one had really put up a challenge but the field was down to only ten as they restarted on lap 28 following a caution. Hendrix got third from trammell on lap 29 and set out after Smith. On lap 39 Hendrix tangled with a lapped car and the result was four more cars sustaining damage including Trammell and Terry Wolfenbarger who had been running in the top five most of the night. The cars were lined back up and then restarted on lap 39. The top three were Hill, Hendrix and Terry Wolfenbarer with only eight able to make the restart. Hill held them off and got yet another Tazewell Speedway victory. Hendrix, Smith, Bobby Wolter Jr. And Andy Galgoci rounded out the top five.

Dukes got the lead after some good side by side racing with Sands but the race got halted when the Eli Keck spun. The top three were Dukes, Sands and Joe Keck in Jim Yeary's car. On lap three Sands got loose and let Keck move into second. On lap 6 Phillip Blackford had mechanical issues and left the track after dropping fluids on tonight's fast clay surface. On the restart it was Dukes, Keck and Sands the top three. The top three closed in together on lap nine and Sands wanted his second place back. Keck kept second and pressured Dukes for the top spot.
